Definition of mole

In this article, I will discuss the definition of the mole.

MOLE

Atom is a very small particle. We cannot define the exact mass of the atom, that's why a specific unit i.e atomic mass unit (amu) is used to describe the mass of the atom. We can also use many other measurement units i.e. pounds, kg, grams, and so on,

There are many concepts of mole:

  • When the atomic mass of any element expressed in grams is called one gram mole or one gram atom or simply a mole of that element.

1 gram atom of carbon =  12 .000g
1 gram atom of oxygen =16 g
  • When the molecular mass of any molecule expressed in grams is called gram mole or gram molecule or simply called mole of that molecule.
1 gram atom of water = 18.0g
1 gram atom of carbon dioxide =44g
  • When the formula mass of any ionic compounds expressed in grams is called  gram formula or simply called mole of that ionic compounds
1 gram of sodium chloride = 58.5
